Ypsi Project: David (by ericarhiannon) It isn’t often that I approach strangers and ask to take their photo. At the beginning of the Ypsi Project that is how I got all my portraits, but honestly it was little stressful. I see David in Abe’s or around town quite often and have never had my camera on me at the time. There is something about the way he carries himself, slowly with his head looking down then held high as if getting stuck in moments of sadness only to snap out of it and hold his head high in defiance.The other day I went to Abe’s prepared and hoping I would catch him and I did… We only spoke for a moment and found out that he moved to Ann Arbor from the east coast when he got married and worked at the Penninsular Paper Mill. He came to Ypsilanti in 1979 after a divorce and has been a customer of Abe’s since it opened….which was quite some time ago. That is all the questions I bothered him with, as he was sitting with friends and I didn’t want to invite myself to their table for too long. I hope to talk with David again, I have a feeling he is full of awesome stories.
